Leading instructional improvement in elementary science: State science coordinators' sense‐making about the Next Generation Science Standards

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a reform effort “for states, by states,” advances ambitious ideals for elementary science teaching, but the fate of these will depend in part on engagement state coordinators (SSCs). This article explores responses SSCs to NGSS purposeful sample 18 US states. Based analysis 19 interviews with 22 SSCs, we develop two arguments. First, SSCs' ideas about improving education converged around three themes: introduction three-dimensional teaching and learning, integration engineering ELA mathematics. Second, sense-making reforming was situated shaped (a) their knowledge how instruction has been continues be de-prioritized, as well experiences (b) facilitating work groups developing standards using Framework K-12 Education, (c) participating professional networks.

Assessing the Genetics Content in the Next Generation Science Standards

Science standards have a long history in the United States and currently form the backbone of efforts to improve primary and secondary education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Although there has been much political controversy over the influence of standards on teacher autonomy and student performance, little light has been shed on how well standards cover science content...

Using Topic Modeling to Assess Middle School Science Discourse based on Next Generation Science Standards

In this paper we apply natural language understanding and topic modeling methods to create an instructional tool for assessing science discourse in interactive multimedia presentations that are created, shared and discussed by students. The resulting assessment prototype will enable teachers to follow student discourse in real time, to understand gaps in student learning, and to improve teachin...

Designing Computer-Supported Complex Systems Curricula for the Next Generation Science Standards in High School Science Classrooms

We present a curriculum and instruction framework for computer-supported teaching and learning about complex systems in high school science classrooms. This work responds to a need in K-12 science education research and practice for the articulation of design features for classroom instruction that can address the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) recently launched in the USA. We outline...
